Kant's Critique of the Power of Judgment

Next meeting Wednesday 25 January, 5pm by zoom

We agreed to read up to the end of section 54 (up to page 212 in the translation by Guyer and Matthews) for our first meeting in the new year. 

This yields a provisional schedule of further meetings as follows:

    8 February  
    22 February  
    8 March
    22 March, when we need to decide on how to meet over the Easter period.

Our final meeting this Semester will take place on Wednesday 21 Dec, at 5pm by zoom. 

We will be discussing §§30-44 (up to p. 185 in the trans. by Guyer) of The Critique of Power Judgment.

 Reading Kant's Critique of the Power of Judgment

Our meetings will be by zoom. We shall start with two sessions devoted to the Introduction (the one published in the first edition of the book, not the original draft Introduction which was first published in 1914 in its entirety). 

 We are using the translation by Guyer and Matthews (CUP 2001) as our main reference point, probably with some of us using other translations or the German original (e.g. Meiner 2001), which is also available online. 

 Our provisional sequence of meetings will be, on Wednesdays at 5–6.30 pm: 

12 October, 26 October, 9 November, 23 November, 7 December and 21 December (tbc).

 New Reading planned for the academic year 2022–23    


We decided after our last meeting that we would read Kant's Critique of Judgment in the next academic year. 

We are likely to restart our fortnightly Wednesday meetings in September, and we may use as our main English translation the relevant volume by Matthews and Guyer in the Cambridge Kant series (Critique of the Power of Judgment, CUP 2000). 

We will meet by zoom.

 We will meet for the last time this academic year on Wed 1 June to tackle the final Chapter of Nancy's The Muses, "The Vestige of Art". 

We will also discuss what to read in the next academic year.

Second meeting on Nancy's The Muses on 6 April

We spent our time yesterday discussing some of the key themes up to page 24. We had a GREAT time doing so. 

We will meet on 6 April to discuss in particular themes from the second half of Nancy's first Chapter, up to page 39.

On 23 March 5pm we will begin to discuss Jean-Luc Nancy, The Muses, trans. Peggy Kamuf (Stanford: Stanford UP, 1996; French original 1994).

We will read for this meeting up to p. 39.
