Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit

Phenomenology Reading Group, 2014-2015

Wednesday 5pm, fortnightly
Samuel Alexander building, South Wing 2.2

First session: 8 October 2014
Franz Kugler, Hegel with his Berlin students

Keeping pace with pioneering trends in the humanities and social sciences, the Manchester Phenomenology Reading Group dedicates the 2014-2015 academic year to the close reading of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit (1807).

Time and location:

The reading group meets in Sam Alex South 2.2 fortnightly on Wednesday at 5pm. Prospective dates of sessions in the Autumn term:

8 October
22 October
5 November
19 November
3 December

Subject to availability of the participants, the sessions may continue outside term-time.

Text:

We shall use A. V. Miller’s classic English translation (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1977 and reprints) alongside Hegel’s German original and Terry Pinkard’s bilingual working translation (on-line).

Method:

We shall discuss around 40 pages each week and aim towards completing the Phenomenologie in about 13-15 sessions by the end of the academic year. The 90-minute sessions conclude with note-taking, and the bullet-points are subsequently circulated among the participants.

First meeting:

The first planning meeting is in Sam Alex South 2.2 at 5pm on Wednesday, 8 October where we shall agree on our reading schedule and other practicalities. Participants are encouraged to read J. N. Findlay’s Foreword for the Miller translation (pp. v-xxx) before the first session.

The reading group is open to all staff and students members of the university and beyond.
